Estimation of pairwise kinship coefficients in large datasets is computationally challenging because the number of related individuals increases quadratically with sample size.
We present IBDkin, a software package written in C for estimating kinship coefficients from identity by descent (IBD) segments. We use IBDkin to estimate kinship coefficients for 7.95 billion pairs of individuals in the UK Biobank who share at least one detected IBD segment with length ≥ 4 cM.

Statistical and Computational Genetics Methods Development
We will use UK Biobank data to develop statistical and computational methods for analyzing genetic data. This work will include methods for correcting errors in the data, methods for identifying genetic material that is shared by individuals due to inheritance from a common ancestor, methods for estimating population history, and methods for detecting genetic variants that are associated with a trait or disease. This project will develop statistical and computational methods that will be used to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heritable disease. We will use the UK Biobank data to develop and test statistical and computational methods for analyzing genetic data, and to discover genetic variants that are associated with physical traits and disease.
