Life expectancy has followed an upward trajectory in most countries and older adults are becoming the largest segment of the population, but as age increases the likelihood for an individual to develop several concomitant diseases also increases and not all extra years are lived in good health status. A major consequence of aging is the growing prevalence of physical, cognitive and sensorial impairments among the population that may affect the overall quality of life. Many of the characteristics that determine intrinsic capacity, particularly health behaviors and social variables, can be modified. These include health-related behaviors and social variables. In previous studies, we have identified dietary factors associated with lower risk of physical impairment, including adherence to a Mediterranean diet pattern, nuts consumption, coffee, or higher intake of B vitamins, potassium, magnesium, zinc, and leucine, among others.
Disability has been defined as the situation in which the individual is dependent and has limitations to pursue a full life and represents the consequences of health conditions or injuries for functional ability. In the period of declining capacity, older people develop geriatric syndromes, which are defined as complex health states that tend to occur only later in life and that do not fall into discrete disease categories. They are often the consequence of multiple underlying factors, and alterations in several organ systems. These syndromes include the frailty syndrome and multimorbidity.
The causes of disability are highly variable especially when complex tasks and participation are considered as forms of disablement. Understanding which pathways are more likely to produce disability and identifying how lifestyles, including diet, and social variables can mediate and modify the disability trajectories are the key to provide the society with effective preventive tools that allow older people to enjoy a full and engaging life for as long as possible. The main aim of the present study is to assess the impact of diet and social variables on transitions from a healthy state to geriatric syndromes and then to disability.
We expect to conduct this study in a period of three years, after obtaining permission from the UK Biobank Steering Committee. The results obtained in this research will be published as scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals in the field of General Medicine, Epidemiology, Nutrition, and Public Health. Final reports of the work done, as well as statistical codes, will be sent to the UK Biobank Steering Committee, together with the publications accepted.
